During this workshop we will:
* Briefly examine the history of teaching beginner reading
* Explore why there is a dichotomy between the research papers and observations of classroom practice.
* Do an in-depth examination of one research paper relating to the phonic rules and also have a discussion of some original, as yet unpublished, research.
* Explore the reasons why phonics has been both loved and maligned
* Discuss ‘Reading in Context’ and ‘Does Learning to Read parallel Learning to Speak?’
* Plenty of opportunity for Qs and As.

PRESENTER BIO:
Tania Jamieson has a M.Ed (TESOL) from Sydney University and 20 years’ teaching experience.
She has presented her research on phonic generalisations at Sydney University TESOL Colloquium, the NSW Learning Differences Convention, and various Big Day Ins.
Tania has a special interest in teaching beginner reading to all ages and levels of ability.
